RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. PURPOSE AND LOCATION OF THE COMPETITION

1.1. The Ferenc Fricsay International Conducting Competition (hereinafter referred to as Competition) is dedicated to the legendary conductor Ferenc Fricsay, the Music Director of the Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra for ten years. The goal of the Competition is to create opportunities for emerging conductors by awarding important prizes, and to provide visibility at the start of their careers. The Competition will take place in Szeged, Hungary, with participation by the Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra.

3. COMPETITION GUIDELINES, APPLICATION PROCESS

3.1. The competition is open to all conductors with no age limits. All applications will be considered regardless of  sex, race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, creed, religion, political belief, sexual orientation, marital status, age or disability.  

3.2. Applications in English must include video submissions and be sent no later than DD.MM.YYYY.   

3.3. Applications must include the following: 

  • 1 (one) recent photograph of the applicant. 
  • Resume or/and CV detailing qualifications and conducting experience of the applicant.
  • Excerpts from video recordings with performances of the applicant: all applicants are asked to submit from 2 to 3 contrasting video recordings containing excerpts from any historical period, with any kind of ensemble (both vocal or instrumental). Each video upload should be at least 5 minutes and must be played in the streaming mode. Videos with candidates conducting a piano are also admissible. Links to video recordings (on YouTube, Vimeo etc.) are also acceptable. One of the video recordings submitted by applicants should also contain a frontal view of the conductor. Video recordings will only be used for Competition and not for any other purpose.
  • Copy of passport of the applicant.

3.4. Selection process

3.4.1. The Jury members will either accept or reject candidates for the First round of the Competition after reviewing their applications and video recordings. 

3.4.2. The Jury members will select 80 candidates for the First round of the Competition. 

3.4.3. Results of the selection will be sent to candidates by email before DD.MM.YYYY and published on the official website of the Competition: http://fricsaycompetition.com.

3.4.4. No reason for accepting or rejecting applications will be given. 

3.5. Registration fee  

3.5.1. The registration fee is € 100,-.

3.5.2. Registration fee must be paid only via an online secure platform available during the registration period while filling out the application form. No other type of payment will be accepted or refunded. 

3.5.3. The registration of the candidate will be confirmed upon payment of the registration fee. 

3.5.4. The registration fee is non-refundable except in the event of cancellation of the Competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

3.5.5. If the candidate selected for the First round of the Competition is unable to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the registration fee will be reimbursed upon presentation of medical proof or inability to obtain a visa or enter the country where the Competition is hosted (Hungary). 

3.6. Participation fee

3.6.1. The participation fee for all candidates accepted for the First round of the Competition is € 300,-.

3.6.2. The participation fee must be paid only via an online secure platform available during the registration period while filling out the application form. No other type of payment will be accepted or refunded. 

3.6.3. The participation in the First round of the Competition will be confirmed upon payment of the participation fee.

3.6.4. The participation fee is non-refundable except in the event of cancellation of the Competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

3.6.6. If the candidate selected for the First round of the Competition is unable to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the registration fee will be reimbursed upon presentation of medical proof or inability to obtain a visa or enter the country where the Competition is hosted (Hungary). 

4. ROUNDS AND SCHEDULE OF THE COMPETITION

4.1. Rounds

FIRST (1st) ROUND
Day I 1st orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, 2nd orchestra session 19:00 – 22:00.  
Day II 1st orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, 2nd orchestra session 19:00 – 22:00.
Day III 1st orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, 2nd orchestra session 19:00 – 22:00.
Day IV 1st orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, 2nd orchestra session 19:00 – 22:00.
SECOND (2nd) ROUND
Day V Orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, concert 19:00 – 21:20.
THIRD (3rd) ROUND (SEMI FINAL)
Day VI Orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, concert 19:00 – 21:20.
FOURTH (4th) ROUND (FINAL)
Day VII Orchestra session 10:00 – 13:00, concert 19:00 – 21:20.

4.2. Venue

4.2.1. All rounds of the Competition will be held at [venue, address] in Szeged, Hungary.

4.2.2. The First, Second and Third rounds of the Competition will be held in closed sessions, the Fourth (Final) round will be open to the public.

4.3. Musical works for rounds 

4.3.1. Each candidate must specify on the application form the musical works he/she wishes to conduct for each round. 

1. First round: 20 minutes per candidateSet of works (applicants will be asked to select one work in each section below)

3. Third round (SEMI FINAL): 1 hour 20 minutes per candidate Set of works (applicants will be asked to select one work in each section below)
4. Fourth round (FINAL):Set of works (applicants will be asked to select one work in each section below) 

4.4. Order of performance 

The order of performance for each round will be determined by drawing lots. 

4.5. Announcement of results

The results of the First round will be announced at [venue, address] on DD.MM.YYYY.

The results of the Second round will be announced [venue, address] on DD.MM.YYYY.

The results of the Third round (semi final) will be announced [venue, address] on DD.MM.YYYY.

The results of the Fourth round (final) will be announced [venue, address] on DD.MM.YYYY.

4. AWARDS CEREMONY

The Awards Ceremony will be held at [venue, address] after the announcement of the results of the Final round.

6. COMMUNICATION, PUBLICITY

6.1. During the Competition, the Executive Committee will claim all rights for the communication material indicated below. Candidates may neither object nor claim any remuneration (this clause includes the press conference). Sound and/or video recording, film shots and photos. Radio, TV and Internet broadcasting of the above items. Copy and/or sale of above items. The candidates will be required to cooperate in all film, photo sessions and/or interviews planned by the Competition. 

6.2. Candidates will have to obtain prior authorisation from the competition before the beginning of the First round for film and photo shots and any interviews other than those planned by the competition. 

7. RECORDING, BROADCASTING

7.1. All rounds will be broadcasted live on the websites [website 1], [website 2]. They will also be recorded for re-broadcasting purposes or for other audio-visual commercial or non commercial use. 

7.2. It is expected that a CD recording of selected performances or a documentary of the Competition may be commercially produced for television and DVD, and that parts or all of the Competition will be made available on the Internet. 

7.3. Camera crews may videotape and/or photograph all competition events. 

8. INSURANCE 

8.1. The staff and partners of the competition will not be liable for accidents indicated below occurring during the competition, damage to or loss of candidates’ belongings., physical, material or moral injury caused or sustained by candidates.  

8.2. All candidates are therefore advised to make their own appropriate insurance arrangements. 

9. OBJECTIONS

9.1. Decisions made by the Executive Committee regarding the administration of the Competition selection based on the application and video recordings and the Jury’s decision on evaluation are final and irrevocable. 2. Candidates may not appeal against the above decisions. 

10. AMENDMENTS

10.1. In order to ensure the smooth running of the competition, the Executive Committee may add, remove and/or change the competition’s rules even after they have been published. If problems arise regarding points not covered by the rules, the competitors will be required to follow the decisions and rulings made by the Executive Committee.

10.2. Disputes If an amicable solution cannot be found in the event of a dispute, the matter will come under the jurisdiction of the German courts. 

10.3. Official language applicable to the Rules is English.

10.4. The above rules are provided in English, German and Russian.

10.5. The English text is the only officially accepted version. 

11. GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION (GDPR) 

11.1. According to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of 25th May 2018 we inform our candidates that the Competition will collect, use and share all the information that you provide.

11.2. During the Competition, your biography and photo will be used for the promotional purposes of the competition. The biographies and photos of the candidates will be available on http://fricsaycompetition.com and used for other communication purposes in the social media and other resources for at least 5 years. 

11.3. The information about candidates not selected for the First round of the Competition will be completely deleted from our server and database of the Competition before the beginning of the First round. 

11.4. The Competition will store candidates’ email addresses in its database in order to send the candidates news. If you do not wish to receive any information or you have questions about the use of your personal data, please contact the Secretariat of the Competition.
